Tom Lambie has farmed for more than 40 years at Totara Valley, near Pleasant Point in South Canterbury. He milks about 800 Jersey-cross cows, wintering them on crops on an adjoining runoff block.
Why have your accountant on the same system?
Tom gave his accountant access to the farm accounts. Before filing his first GST return, he asked her to look over the paperwork, and she picked up one query.
“Thankfully after further clarification we agreed it was coded correctly. Working on the same platform makes sure everyone is looking at the same item so it’s definitely worth having your accountant on board.”
A paperless office
Tom now scans his invoices into Farm Focus, and his office is officially paperless.
“Another enjoyable aspect is being able to process invoices as soon as a supplier email arrives. My invoices are named, coded and dated ready to be filed with the bank for payment and these are then easily matched the day after payment with the direct feeds from the bank.”
A budget that keeps up with the stock
Tom uses the Stock Reconciliation Report as part of his farm budget.
“Stock was recorded as of 1 July, so I just need to keep that updated as part of my original budget which is locked in. The planning tool attached to the budget is now a living document that can be reviewed regularly.”
A long-standing customer
“The reason Rural Cash Manager and now Farm Focus has been my only accounting program is the company’s commitment to continuous improvement, easy user interface and they do happen to have New Zealand’s best support team!”
Still on the same page today
Tom still runs the dairy farm’s accounts in Farm Focus. Bank feeds, Fonterra, Farm Source and Farmlands flow straight in, the Invoice Scanner handles the bills, and GST is filed every month. His accountant and farm consultant see the same live numbers. Since July 2026, he can also ask the AI Farm Assistant quick questions about his actuals, plans and reports.
Every Farm Focus customer gets free onboarding and phone support from a team that knows farming, in New Zealand and Australia.
